Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healthcare in the world. It has its roots in the East where it was practiced, tested, refined and documented over centuries. In China today, its efficacy is deemed such that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and western medicine are offered side by side. Its use in the west is relatively recent but, with a growing research base, acupuncture has been gaining in popularity in the last forty years.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into certain points on the body with the aim of re-balancing energy and activating the body’s ability to heal itself.

Why acupuncture?

People initially seek acupuncture treatment for a wide variety of reasons; some to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ, headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance, but they have no obvious diagnosis. And many have regular treatments because they find it so relaxing.

I qualified with a Licentiate in Acupuncture in 2004, after three years of training at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. I work from a dedicated treatment room in my home in North Berwick.

How It WorksTreatments

My teenage son visited Jo for a few sessions after complaining of a sore heel and foot during, and after participating in any sport. We were amazed by the dramatic results in such a short period of time. Jo’s sympathetic and professional manner put my son at ease immediately, to the point he looked forward to his next session! I would highly recommend Jo for her understanding and knowledge coupled with her professional and assuring manner. A superb acupuncturist.

Henry had suffered with considerable foot and ankle pain over a number of months. He is a teenage boy who loves sport and the discomfort was getting progressively worse, to the point that he was in constant pain. Regular treatment and pain relief were having little or no effect and so I was keen to try acupuncture as an alternative approach. Jo’s friendly and calming manner put Henry instantly at ease. After the first two sessions the pain in is his ankle and feet had started to dramatically recede. He then suffered a further, completely unrelated, rugby injury whereby he strained a muscle at the top of his leg. A further session of acupuncture and the results were remarkable - the foot pain was almost completely gone and the subsequent injury was making a rapid recovery. The acupuncture treatments with Jo were without doubt hugely instrumental in Henry’s healing and the outcome far exceeded our expectations. I am absolutely thrilled as Henry is now enjoying all of his sporting activities completely pain free. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Jo - a great acupuncture practitioner who delivers tangible results.

I went to see Jo initially with quite severe lower back pain which was acute enough to have me off work and left me unable to swim or do a short dog walk. Having never had acupuncture treatment before, I went along with an open mind. Treatment from Jo, helped to alleviate the back pain and stiffness even after just one session. Additionally, I’ve found Jo’s approach very refreshing and inspiring. She worked with me holistically and another couple of sessions helped to improve symptoms of stress, tension and anxiety. Her lovely calm, warm and professional approach had me leaving her beautiful treatment room refreshed, calm and centred. I would highly recommend Jo to anyone and I would not hesitate in returning to her for future treatments.

I tried Acupuncture because I suffered from sever tendonitis in both ankles as I enjoy quite high impact sports and wanted to continue with those. I also had a somewhat 'non serious but complicated' medical history for example receiving treatment & operations as a result of ski accidents, or operations as a result of a medical issue but in total I have had 9 general anaesthetics. It truly is amazing what she's achieved with me - I've gone from not being able to walk back to a 2 hour training session. Jo's approach is kind and patient, her home practice so welcoming and peaceful making your treatment a pleasure.

I take HRT, eat well, exercise, try to make sure I get enough sleep and acupuncture with Jo is part of the bag of tricks I use to keep myself healthy. Jo is really knowledgeable, we have talked a lot about menopause. For me, it was so important not to feel judged about taking medication to help me get through this stage of my life and I feel totally supported by her, she is so positive about combining conventional and complementary approaches to health. I always really look forward to our sessions.

I saw Jo regularly for three months for awful migraines. They have reduced hugely so I am delighted but the other thing is, I do genuinely feel so much better in myself! I’m less up and down and on much more of an even keel emotionally. I am still having acupuncture every couple of months. I really enjoy the whole experience and I feel like I’m doing a good thing for myself!

'My wife said to say thank you, she feels like she’s got her husband back.’ This was the testimonial of a formerly very active older gentleman who amazed us both by needing only four treatments with moxa and acupuncture to treat back pain which prevented him from walking more than 100 metres. By the last treatment he was back to leading a normal life.

‘Thank you for being there for me, for listening and being so patient with me. And for the treatment, it has made a massive difference.’ This was a letter from a lady who was a carer and, prior to treatment, couldn’t look after her elderly mother because of her shoulder pain.

I have been seeing Jo for over three years now. I am a full time carer and I also have my own health problems. Life is exhausting emotionally and physically. Acupuncture helps me cope better. I love chatting to Jo, I feel like she really listens to me and I always leave feeling like a weight has been lifted.

‘Thank you for your gentle presence, your care and your compassion.’ Thank you letter from a longstanding patient.

I find Jo to be very calm and reassuring as we prepare for and carry out my treatments. And I have found the benefits to be gentle, yet significant. Thank you for looking after me so well.
